Why What Touches Your Body Matters
Most of us spend more time thinking about what we put into our bodies than what we put against them. But if you use disposable period pads, you're placing a synthetic, chemically processed product against some of your most sensitive skin, for hours at a time, every month.
We think that's worth talking about honestly.
What's Actually in a Disposable Pad?
Conventional disposable pads are typically made from wood pulp, synthetic polymers, and adhesives. Many are bleached white using chlorine-based processes — a method that can produce trace amounts of dioxins as a byproduct. And increasingly, independent research is raising concerns about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also called “forever chemicals”) turning up in some period products, including period underwear.
A 2025 University of Notre Dame study found intentional PFAS in one in three period underwear brands tested. PFAS don't break down in the body or the environment, and long-term exposure has been linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns.
We're not saying every disposable pad or period underwear product is harmful. But we are saying: if you're going to wear something against your skin every month for decades, it's reasonable to care about what it's made of.
How Mighty Eve Is Built Differently
We designed our periodwear with four layers, each doing a specific job. Here's how they work together.
Runs throughout the whole garment — the soft fabric you feel against your skin on the sides of your body. Bamboo fabric is exceptionally good at moving moisture away from your skin and drying quickly. That matters because bacteria thrive in warm, damp environments. It's soft, breathable, and comfortable for all-day wear.
Sits underneath the bamboo in the front, back, and crotch area. It's a breathable polyurethane laminate — the same kind of material used in medical and childcare products — and it's what stops any leaks from reaching your clothes, while still letting your skin breathe.
Sits behind the leakproof membrane. Made from high-performance microfibre (80% polyester, 20% polyamide), this is the layer that actually holds the fluid — drawing it in and keeping it there, away from your skin.
The fabric touching your skin in the front, back, and crotch — this is where we've done something different. This innermost layer is made from bamboo charcoal fabric. Mature bamboo is heated to over 800°C and turned into activated charcoal, which is then ground into tiny particles and embedded directly into the fabric fibres during manufacturing. Those particles wick moisture away from your skin and into the absorbent layer above, while millions of microscopic pores trap odour-causing bacteria — keeping that area fresher for longer.
Because the charcoal is baked into the fabric itself rather than sprayed on as a surface treatment, the protection doesn't wash out. It lasts the lifetime of the garment.
Being Honest About Where We Are
We believe our products are safe and free of harmful chemicals. We're in the process of commissioning independent PFAS and chemical safety testing — and we'll publish the results on our product pages as soon as they're back.
That commitment to transparency is part of what Mighty Eve is built on. We're not going to make claims we can't back up.

Common Questions
What chemicals are found in disposable period pads?
Conventional disposable pads are typically made from wood pulp, synthetic polymers, and adhesives. Many are bleached using chlorine-based processes, which can produce trace dioxins as a byproduct. Some period products have also been found to contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or "forever chemicals"), which don't break down in the body or environment and have been linked to hormone disruption.
Are Mighty Eve products free from PFAS and harmful chemicals?
We believe our products are free from harmful chemicals. We're in the process of commissioning independent PFAS and chemical safety testing, and we'll publish the results on our product pages as soon as they're back. Our periodwear uses bamboo fabric and medical-grade breathable materials — no added perfumes, no chlorine bleaching.
How does bamboo charcoal work in period underwear?
Bamboo is heated to over 800°C to create activated charcoal, which is ground into fine particles and embedded directly into the fabric fibres during manufacturing. The charcoal's millions of microscopic pores trap odour-causing bacteria and wick moisture away from the skin. Because it's baked into the fabric rather than sprayed on as a surface treatment, the protection doesn't wash out over time.
How many layers does Mighty Eve periodwear have, and what does each one do?
Mighty Eve periodwear has four layers: (1) a soft bamboo outer layer that moves moisture away from skin; (2) a breathable polyurethane leakproof barrier that stops leaks without trapping heat; (3) a high-absorbency microfibre layer that draws and holds fluid; and (4) a bamboo charcoal contact layer against the skin that fights odour naturally.
Is bamboo fabric good for sensitive skin?
Yes. Bamboo fabric is naturally soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, which makes it well-suited to sensitive skin. Unlike synthetic materials that can trap heat and moisture, bamboo moves fluid away from the skin quickly, reducing the warm, damp conditions where bacteria and irritation thrive. Mighty Eve products contain no added perfumes or harsh chemical treatments.
How is Mighty Eve periodwear different from disposable pads?
Disposable pads use synthetic materials and adhesives, often bleached with chlorine. Mighty Eve periodwear uses bamboo fabric and medical-grade breathable materials with no single-use plastics. It's machine washable, designed to last years rather than hours, and built to move with your body rather than sit against it. See our full range of periodwear for options by flow type and lifestyle.
