Products designed to help can sometimes cause problems, like elastic that digs in, seams that rub by midday, or 'breathable' fabrics that stop feeling that way after a while. Here’s what we can honestly tell you: what bamboo actually does, what we’ve tested, and where our products work best. And where they don’t.
Why sensitive skin and period underwear don't always get along
If you have sensitive skin and a heavy flow, being told to 'just switch fabrics' often isn’t helpful. The things that cause irritation are long hours of contact without a change, and that’s exactly what heavy-flow products require. If the fabric isn’t right, that can be a real problem.
People often talk about a few main issues: synthetic fabrics that trap heat and moisture instead of letting it escape, elastic at the leg or waist that digs in instead of lying flat, and chemical finishes added to make synthetic fabrics antibacterial or moisture-wicking. Ironically, the finish meant to fix one problem can end up causing another.
We’re not calling out any particular competitor. These are just the common issues people mention and search for again and again.
What bamboo actually does differently
Bamboo jersey is the outer fabric we use for all our shorts, pants, and briefs. Here are two key things to know:
- It’s naturally breathable. Bamboo fibre has an open structure that lets air flow and moves moisture away from your skin instead of trapping it.
- Bamboo charcoal naturally has anti-bacterial and anti-odour properties. These come from the material itself, not from any chemical coating on a synthetic fabric.
No chemical nasties
We tested every part of our products in independent labs because you deserve to know what’s touching your skin. The tests showed there are no harmful chemicals, and we’re happy to share that.
We didn’t just test the finished product. We sent every part, every fabric and every layer, for independent lab testing. This was a full chemical safety screening, not just a quick check. Nothing was flagged. There’s nothing to hide. Only fabric that’s good for your body.
UK law doesn’t require testing for several things on products like ours, but we asked for those tests anyway: bisphenols, monomers, cyclosiloxanes, acetophenone/2-phenyl-2-propanol, pH value, and UV absorbers or stabilizers. Every test was passed.
And yes, PFAS. We know this is important to many of you, so we made sure to test for PFAS specifically. None were found. This matters to us, and we’re glad we can give you a clear answer.

Care, straight from the label
Turn your shorts inside out and put them in the washing machine. Wash at 30º with your other clothes. You don’t need to pre-soak them, though you can if you prefer to hand wash. Hang or tumble-dry. Skip fabric softeners to keep the waterproofing.

You might find general advice elsewhere saying to air-dry bamboo fabric only, but that’s for bamboo fabric in general, not our products. The instructions above are made for your product, so those are the ones to use.
How our period product range touches your skin
Not every product in our range touches your skin the same way, and we want to be clear about that. Here’s a straightforward breakdown, starting with the ones that have the most contact.
Our pants and shorts have the closest and most continuous contact with your skin:
- Night Period Shorts: bamboo jersey outer with a bamboo charcoal lining throughout the full protection area, per its own product page. It also has an extra comfort waistband built for overnight wear, when skin contact is longest and most continuous of all.
- Gusher Bamboo Period Shorts: bamboo jersey outer with a super-absorbent microfibre core, plus leak-proof lining that extends all the way down the inner legs as well as front and back. Built for heavy flow, worn all day against skin.
- Swap-out Period Pants: the pant itself is bamboo jersey with a bamboo charcoal microfibre absorbent layer, per its own product page, worn directly against skin all day. The extra absorbent pads sit inside a front-and-back pocket rather than being poppered directly to the fabric.
- Mighty Safe-days Briefs: If your sensitivity is a daily, lower-flow issue rather than a heavy-flow one, this is probably the most relevant product for you.
A lighter mention: pads.
- Pads: These have a bamboo charcoal liner and a microfibre core. They sit inside your own underwear, not as underwear themselves. Skin contact is real but less constant than with pants or shorts worn all day.
The honest summary
Bamboo stands out from synthetic period underwear in two main ways. It’s naturally breathable and moves moisture. And when we use bamboo charcoal lining, its anti-bacterial and anti-odour benefits come from the material itself, not a chemical finish. Every part of our range passed independent chemical testing, including for PFAS. To be clear, we haven’t clinically tested our fabric for 'sensitive skin' or 'hypoallergenic' standards, and no dermatologist has certified it for sensitive skin. What we’re sharing is an honest, evidence-based answer, not a certification. In short: it’s bamboo, it’s designed to be chemical free, and all our products have been tested and shown to have no harmful chemicals.
